PVC Art

We just got back yesterday from Nate's sister's wedding. It was a great weekend with lots of visiting with family. We even scored two free round trip tickets on our way home which was pretty sweet, but now we are pretty exhausted. We have a lot to share with you about the events of this last week, but I couldn't miss the opportunity to participate in the Summer Pinterest Challenge!

This time I decided to try making something I had pinned months ago and had just never gotten around to trying out. I pinned this 3D Dance Poster because I thought the shape and the dimension of the piece was really unique.

I decided I wanted to literally make my version 3D so I grabbed a piece of PVC we had hanging out in the garage. I tried cleaning the lettering off with nail polish remover which was a fail. After I assembled the piece, Nate let me know we did have a solvent that would clean it off but I ended up spray painting it white since I couldn't reach all the nooks with the solvent.

I took my pvc out to the garage and chopped it up with our miter saw. To get the 3Dness, I just randomly chopped with no measuring. I just made sure I chopped some thinner pieces and some thicker ones. I tried a bunch of arrangements and finally settled on this one.

I then attached all the pieces with pvc cement and let it dry for a few hours.

While the pvc was drying, I worked on the pictures. I decided this would be the perfect piece to display all the pics we have of our dogs in a non-overwhelming way. I collected a bunch of our favorite photos over the last year of them and printed them out on 4x6 photo paper. Using a spare piece of pvc, I traced and cut out each picture. I'm not going to lie, this was a little tedious, but I love the final result.

After each picture was cut out, I checked to make sure it fit well on the top of the pvc piece.

I then took all of the pics and glued them to the top of the pvc structure.

After letting everything dry, it got hung at the top of the stairs. This wall definitely needs more on it (I'm thinking a floor to ceiling photo wall that we build up over time) but I'm loving it as the first piece. It also feels good to actually display some of the pictures we take of the dogs!

Make sure you check out all the great projects that are a part of the pinterest challenge! You can find them all linked to the following sites:

  2. Love this idea! Did the pvc cement really hold it all together? There is really not a lot of surface area to adhere to. I would think you would have to do something else to make it sturdy, like use little bolts or something?

    1. It sure did! If you were only holding two pieces together I would agree with you that there isn't a lot of surface area, but since all of them connect to at least two other pieces, it is really stable.

  3. This is so cool! I remember a billion years ago a friend of mine asked me to make something like this. I just never knew how to do it. :)

  5. I love that, and PVC is so cheap. I can definitely afford to try this one! I'm hosting a linky party "One Creative Weekend" at OneCreativeMommy.com. I'd love for you to visit and link up this idea and/or anything else you'd like to share.

  6. Great idea - I wonder if you could use wider diameter pieces - you definitely have me thinking. I guess I'll just have to - PIN it! LOL Came over from Twigg's

  8. I love this idea! My hubby and I just tied the knot, and I have tons of wedding pictures I wanted to put up in my office at Dish. I was really trying to avoid stuffing them in boring frames, so this is the perfect alternative! Hooray! It looks so simple to pull off too, thanks to your step by step instructions. You’d be shocked at how many blogs just put the finished product up; that’s why I usually record my DIY stuff from HGTV and DIY Network, so I can see the project from start to finish and rewind if I need clarification. Luckily, I have the Hopper DVR with loads of recording space to house all my project aspirations. I am kind of a DIY fanatic. LOL! I can’t wait to give this idea a try. I’ll let you know how it goes!
