Birthday Kayaking

I really feel like we don't take advantage of living in Florida most of the time so when Nate asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday I told him I wanted to go kayaking.

I really love kayaking and canoeing and we really don't get to go very often and so it is a frequent birthday request but this is the first time we've gone in FL and I was really hoping to see some manatees.

About 5 minutes into the trip we saw a huge spurt of water and all of the sudden two manatees appeared right near our kayak. I tried to get a pic but all I got was a little glimpse of a tail.

We actually followed the manatees for about 15 minutes and it was really cool to see them pop up every once in awhile.

We kayaked out into a part of the Gulf and headed over to a beachy little area.

The beach ended up being a campground (I don't know why camping in FL seems weird to me but it does) which made it a really nice break spot.

There was a "no swimming. Big holes" sign that had us kinda confused until we walked around the shallow water. There were actual big holes or soft spots in the sand (you can see all the dark spots behind Nate) which I've never seen before. There were little holes in the sand where it was soft like something was living under the sand.

We also found this horseshoe crap shell which was cool since it was completely intact from the top but completely empty underneath.

And there were some cool birds along the way. Kayaking on the Gulf was so different then the river kayaking we've done before. The water was really choppy on the way back and so it was much more dynamic and strenuous then we've experienced in the past which made it fun and more interesting. It also meant I wanted a nap that afternoon!

I had so much fun and it was a great way to spend my birthday weekend!
